BlueBeacon Manager App for iOS

Where to get BlueBeacon Manager App for iOS

The configuration and management app BlueBeacon Manager is available for free for iOS (for devices running iOS 8.0 or newer) on Apple Store. BlueBeacon Manager App works only with beacons with second-generation firmware.

List of nearby BlueBeacon beacons

Once launched the app, press on Configure Beacons tab to start scanning for beacons nearby. Only beacons of BlueBeacon series (with second-generation firmware) are listed. No other beacon or BLE device is listed.
For each beacon, the following information are provided:
- model and serial number
- icons (Eddystone, iBeacon, Quuppa, BlueUp Sensors) according to the frames advertised by the beacon
- battery residual capacity (%, estimate) and received signal strength indicator (in dBm)
- arrow icon representing if the beacon is connectable (arrow present) or non-connectable (arrow non present).
Differently from Android app, advertised frames are not visualized.

Filtering of nearby BlueBeacon beacons

It is possible to filter nearby beacons by the following parameters:
- RSSI (in dBm);
- Model;
- Serial number;
- Advertised frame type.
To do so, select the Lens icon at the top right. The different options will be shown. You can enabled multiple filtering options.
When filtering is enabled, the lens icon is shown in red color.

Connecting to a BlueBeacon beacon

When the beacon is connectable (Bluetooth icon on the right), you can connect by pressing on it. Select "Configure Beacon" from the menu.
App will start connection process to the beacon. Depending on several factors (number of nearby beacons, distance from beacon, smartphone model, Android release) this process can be immediate or last a few seconds.

In case the beacon is locked with a password, you will be asked to insert the password. Default password is blueup. In case password in not inserted correctly for three consecutive times or a 30-seconds period expires, the beacon automatically disconnect and enter non-connectable mode for 1 hour (but it continues to advertised as programmed).
Once password has been correctly inserted, app start reading beacon information and configuration. Then, the main menu interface is provided, offering access to the following options:
- Device Informations: access to beacons information (model, serial number, ...);
- Eddystone: configuration of Eddystone frames;
- iBeacon / Others: configuration of iBeacon frames or other frames (Quuppa, Sensors);
- Global Settings: configuration of global beacon parameters.

Device Informations

Device Informations menu contains the following non-modifiable beacon data:
- Manufacturer name: BlueUp
- Model number: varies depending on model
- Serial number: varies depending on beacon
- Hardware revision: refers to revision of beacon hardware
- Firmware revision: refers to revision of beacon firmware: 5.0 or higher
- Software revision: refers to revision of SDK used for firmware development

Eddystone Configuration

Eddystone menu allows to configure up to 4 slots for Eddystone frames. Each slot can be configured as Eddystone-UID, URL or TLM (iOS app presently does not allws to configure EID frame).
By default, you will find Slot 1 configured as URL, with https://www.blueupbeacons, and other slots not configured.

You can configure each slot according your needs.
For Eddystone-UID you need to specify NameSpace ID (10 bytes) and Instance ID (6 bytes).
For Eddystone-URL you need to specify URL address (URL scheme can be selected by pressing on the bold URL scheme section).
For all configured slots, you need to specify advertising interval and transmission power. Additionally you can modify default calibrated RSSI at 0 meter (according to Eddystone specifications), but please consider that modifying default value can affect proximity estimation (contact us before doing such modification).
If you do not need Eddystone-frame broadcast, you simply need to disable all slots from Slot 1 to Slot 4.

In order to update beacon with modified Eddystone configuration you can:
- press "Update" at the top right;
- press "Back": you will be asked to update beacon with new configuration data.

iBeacon or other frames configuration

iBeacon / Others menu allows to configure up to 4 slots for iBeacon frames or other frames (presently: Quuppa packet, Sensors packet). Each slot can be configured as iBeacon, Quuppa or Sensors (this latter option is available only on BlueBeacon Sensor beacon).
By default, you will find Slot 5 configured as iBeacon (with default BlueUp UUID: ACFD065E-C3C0-11E3-9BBE-1A514932AC01), and other slots not configured.

You can configure each slot according your needs.
For iBeacon you need to specify UUID (16 bytes) major and minor (2 bytes each, integer from 0 to 65535).
For Quuppa you need to specify if tag ID is MAC address or custom identifier (to be inserted).
For all configured slots, you need to specify advertising interval and transmission power. Additionally, for iBeacon, you can modify default calibrated RSSI at 1 meter (according to iBeacon specifications), but please contact us before doing such modification.
If you do not need any among iBeacon, Quuppa or Sensors frames, you just need to disable ("Not Set") all slots.

In order to update beacon with iBeacon (or Quuppa or Sensors) configuration you can:
- press "Update" at the top right;
- press "Back": you will be asked to update beacon with new configuration data.

Global Settings

Global Settings menu allows to modify configuration settings that apply to beacon operating modes (see also Section "Configuration and settings":
- Remain Connectable (enabled by default): if you disable this option, proprietary packet (containing beacon name) will be non-connectable. To restore in connectable mode, you need to power-cycling the beacon, connect to the beacon within 30 seconds and change this setting;
- Anonymous Mode (disabled by default): by enabling this option, beacon will stop broadcasting proprietary packet (containing beacon name). Once disconnected the beacon will not be listed in nearby beacons list, but will continue to advertise according saved configurations for Eddystone, iBeacon and other frames. To restore in default mode, you need to power-cycling the beacon, connect to the beacon and change setting;
- Advertising Daily Schedule (disabled by default): by enabling this option, beacon will advertise configured frames in a certain daily time window, by defining a start and a stop hour (from 0:00 to 23:59). During off-period, the beacon continues to broadcast the proprietary packet with name (unless Anonymous Mode has been enabled), thus, will be listed in the nearby beacon list;
- Accelerometer-based Mode (only for BlueBeacon Tag, disabled by default): it is possible to set an operating mode based on accelerometer status. Four options are available, one excluding the other: two orientation-based modes (beacon enters low-power mode when placed horizontally; e.g., leaning on a plane), and two motion-based modes (the beacon advertise when moved or shaken):
1. Down-to-Sleep: when placed horizontally, the beacon stops broadcasting all frames;
2. Down-to-Unset: when placed horizontally, the beacon stops broadcasting all frames configured in slots, but continues broadcasting the packet with name;
3. Advertise-on-Move: when moved, the beacon starts advertising frames configured in slots (advertising of packet with name is always performed; three levels of sensitivity for motion detection are available, low, medium, high);
4. Advertise-on-Shake: when moved, the beacon starts advertising frames configured in slots (advertising of packet with name is always performed).

In order to update beacon with new global settings you can:
- press "Update" at the top right;
- press "Back": you will be asked to update beacon with new configuration data.

Unlock/Lock beacon

By default, beacon is provided with Lock state enabled: this means that you need to insert password to connect to the beacon and read/write characteristics in GATT service. Default password is blueup.

When you log-in in Lock mode (password requested for connection), in the top right menu "More" in Global Settings, you will find two options:
- Unlock and Disconnect: with this option, beacon will be updated in Unlock mode, e.g., no password required to connect and modify it. We stronly suggest to use this option only for internal test and development activities;
- Change Lock and Disconnect: with this option, you can change the Lock password. For maximum security, you will be asked to insert old password and twice new password.

When you log-in in Unlock mode (no password required for connection), in the top right menu in Global Settings, you will find one options:
- Lock and Disconnect: with this option, beacon will be updated in Lock mode, e.g., password will be required for successive connection. For maximum security, you will be asked to insert twice the password.

Factory Reset

"Factory Reset" option, available in the top right menu "More" in Global Settings, allows to restore beacon with manufacturer default settings.

Firmware upgrade

"Firmware upgrade" option, available in the top right menu "More" in Global Settings, allows to perform OTA (Over-The-Air) firmware upgrade. The app check firmware versions on the beacon and available. At the end of the firmware upgrade procedure, that last about 30 seconds, it may be necessary to power-cycle the beacon.
